The holiday season is here, and you may already be feeling burned out, stressed, and anxious from your job and day-to-day life. Most people spend the majority of their waking hours working. And if you hate your job, dread going, and don’t gain any satisfaction out of what you’re doing, it can take a serious toll on you. There are times where you may enjoy the work but are forced to work for hours every day, even on weekends and holidays. This can soon turn into work burnout and affect all areas of your life with the Holidays just adding more stress possibly.
Be honest with yourself…do you have any of these feelings?
- Being exhausted after work – No energy to do the things you need to or want to (exercise, family time) …this leads to no work-life balance which is unhealthy
- Dream about quitting
- Being frustrated all the time – Losing interest, you stop caring about the company. You are always in a bad mood and are not sleeping enough
- Dreading every Monday
- Poor performance – missing deadlines or targets, committing to too many mistakes and making no progress
- Disregard for clients and coworkers
- Depressed or sad
- Overwhelmed with at home and family life
- Never any time for myself
- Dread a job search – avoid searching for a new job or hate the thought of a job search because you are so overwhelmed. Exploring other options may be worth the time and make you happier than you are now.
How can you make this last month of 2021 and the new year rewarding in the workplace and in life?
Try some of these suggestions:
- Learn to say no – Not only can you say no when someone asks you to add to your stress, but it is also good for you to say no.
- Establish boundaries when you are off work.
- Take a break – breathe, stretch, close your eyes for a few minutes.
- Use Aromatherapy – Keeping lavender, or other essential oils like eucalyptus, on hand is a great way to quickly calm yourself and reduce holiday stress.
- Develop a Self-Care Routine – Take time to do something for yourself. Take a hot bath, read a book, take a nap, do yoga, meditate, or go for a workout.
- Make Lists to Stay Organized – Watching the small tasks get marked off helps your mind see things getting done helping reduce your anxiety.
- Delegate Tasks to Others – It is easy to become overwhelmed, we tend to shut down and nothing gets done. Ask for help from co-workers and family members!
- Find a Support Network – for work and family.
- Look into Other Job Possibilities – have you ever thought about doing something different or being your own boss?
