You’re Never "Too Old" to Change Careers

Jan 22, 2020

Switching careers later in life doesn’t have to be scary—you can make it enjoyable.

Imagine turning 50 and realizing that the career you once loved is now completely stale? You couldn’t imagine doing this job for another 15 days, never mind another 15 years. But you can’t make a career change at 50, can you? It turns out that you absolutely can.

You will need to make some adjustments.
You will also need to know yourself, take some time to think, deal with the fear, be realistic about what you can do, use your network, consider all options, stay strong and be flexible.

I myself did it!!  I worked in the automotive field for over 30 years, mostly in the accounting dept.  Even though I had over 30 years of accounting knowledge, it was only in one field. I was turned down repeatedly, it was depressing, to say the least.

I decided to drive Uber for a few months until I could figure it out. Those few months turned into 3½ years and only made me more depressed. I kept applying for jobs, most didn’t even respond.
Then, a friend told me about a bookkeeping job with Buying Time.  It sounded perfect, using my years of knowledge, working from home for a local woman-run company.

They looked at my years of knowledge, not just the field it had been in. They didn’t seem to mind that I was older.  They didn’t seem to care that I’d been driving Uber for over 3 years.

They gave me a chance!!

I accepted the job and feel it was one of the best decisions I ever made.  I’ve made a spot for myself in a career that didn’t even exist when I was young.  A career that makes me feel needed and appreciated.
You too can do this!  Give yourself a chance and a change!
