Staying Focused When Working From Home

Aug 16, 2022

Do you ever sit down to get to work and end up just staring at your task list not knowing where to start? Find yourself thinking about all the work you have to do, but can’t seem to focus on one thing at a time. Besides having a lot of self-discipline and time management skills, there are other things we can do to help set ourselves up for success and stay on task while working from home.

One of the most important things for me is to have a clean and tidy working environment. This of course refers to my desk, but also the surrounding area. I like to make sure everything is cleaned up the night before work, so in the morning when I enter my office everything is in place and there aren’t any distractions right off the bat.

Having a routine is also very important. This has been tricky for me to adapt to. It’s hard to wake up and not go straight to my emails and work, but I have learned that taking even just 15-20 minutes for myself in the morning really helps start the work day off on the right foot. It can be even the most simple routine. Mine usually consists of waking up, doing my morning face routine, 100 jumps (just little hops to get the blood flowing and wake up the lymphatic system), opening all the blinds to let the sun in for all my plants, and getting a glass of ice water.

Now that we have everything in place and our morning routine down, how do we combat the mid-day fatigue and loss of motivation? I’ve found that if I catch myself drifting off, or staring at that task list again and not making progress, it’s best to just get up and do something. Whether it’s a few jumping jacks, yoga, or a quick chore like putting dishes away or sweeping the kitchen, some sort of movement usually helps reset my mind and body.

These few tips have helped me tremendously to be aware and acknowledge the times that I’m feeling stuck and unfocused and take action instead of sitting in that unproductive state. I encourage you to implement these things into your daily work-from-home routine and see what a difference a few small changes can make.
